Grand Foyer - Main Installation
Startime at the Michigan [The Bang!]
Ann Arbor-based party specialists The Bang! bring their DIY theatrical aesthetic to the Michigan Theater for the 47th Ann Arbor Film Festival. Expounding on the geographic theme, the troupe aims to transport festival-goers into a new world to help make this year's installation one to remember. From the razzle-dazzle star-themed staircase to the light-up spymap hearkening back to James Bond supervillains of old, the decor should make people feel as if they are somewhere special -- as well as add that extra special touch to the breathtaking historic lobby.

Utilizing analog image making with digital sound design, this interactive light projection contains a milieu of images and sounds available to the viewer. While the images for collage will be readily available to the user, how to control the soundscape is for the image creator to discover.

HERE YOU ARE [Ted Kennedy]
Here You Are is a video installation of LCD screens in multiple locations. Each screen loops a unique set of video portraits made during the Winter 2008 Shadow Art Fair. The subjects were recorded while listening to a text of cliché phrases, sections of poems, prayers, or original sayings. The variety of responses recorded in the portraits emphasizes the different ways people interpret “insight/advice”. Viewers of the portraits will be able to listen to the text as the subject heard it during the recording.

Here, the works in the 47th Ann Arbor Film Festival competition are globally sited predominantly by zip code but sometimes by city or even country name. A hand-drawn map with pushpins denoting filmmakers' hometowns used to grace the Michigan Theater Lobby at film festival time. That map was the main inspiration for this video, which is essentially the same thing created using the media of our time.
